Djibril Cisse agreed a move to Marseille following talks with the French club. The Marseille president Pape Diouf travelled to Merseyside to open negotiations with Liverpool. Liverpool's chief executive Rick Parry yesterday returned from a fortnight's holiday in the Caribbean and his first task will be to have talks with Diouf over the France international forward's future.
Diouf will seek to persuade Parry to accept a loan move for Cisse with an option to purchase the player at a later date. However, Parry is likely to hold out for a £7m transfer in the knowledge that Marseille are highly capable of raising funds through the sale of the France international winger Franck Ribery to Manchester United, Arsenal or Lyon.
Parry may even raise the suggestion of an exchange deal, though Diouf, who values Ribery at £25m, will undoubtedly resist. Lyon had considered an approach for Cisse but they would want to take the player only on loan. Meanwhile Claudio Ranieri's talks with Marseille over his becoming the next manager at the Stade Velodrome appeared close to collapse last night as the club feared the Italian's financial demands would be too great.
